RIO FOOTBALL É A VIDA | RIO FOOTBALL IS LIFE
BRINGING AFFORDABLE, TEMPORARY RELIEF TO EVERY ATHLETE* IN THE WORLD, STARTING WITH RIO DE JANEIRO
Primeiro Passo retains the natural feel, preserves the passion and spirit of the culture, and inspires aspiring football athletes by revitalizing their heritage of playing barefoot football in the streets of Rio De Janeiro.
CULTURE & ASSEMBLY INSTRUCTIONS
Rio De Janeiro is packed with passion, good vibes, and the pursuit for going professional.
The video above shows the culture and vibe of Rio followed by an instructional video on how to assemble Primeiro Passo.
This is the sheet of bagasse textile that would be given to the user which includes:
+ pair of footwear & laces
+ team wristbands
+ Portuguese instructions with step by step diagrams
INSIGHTS & OPPORTUNITIES
Rio's culture is about kicking back, taking off your shoes, and just playing ball. Pure sport and feeling free. They enjoy the natural feel of playing barefoot, so I had to find the balance between protection and being true to the sport of barefoot football without making it look like a football shoe.
The biggest challenge for me was framing the project in regards to cost, durability, and preserving the culture of the sport. I started by studying the different contact points where the players would mostly use on their foot, and then designed around the foot to create a second skin and incorporate durability for playing on cement.
There are two main materials: Bagasse textile & Nike Fly Leather
Bagasse is the by-product of sugarcane which is typically used as bio-fuel
Fly Leather is compressed scraps that are collected from various local companies.
Both are very sustainable and can be source locally as Brazil is a large manufacturer of leather and sugarcane. They are heat stamped for the pattern and then heat compressed to fuse elements together.
This project provides immediate relief and empowerment to children in the favelas. It would also be launched as a PR event to boost Nike's brand awareness in Rio De Janerio as a sustainable way to impact their community and fuel their passion for football.
Primeiro Passo Tech Pack
This is my first take on implementing the colors and passion of Rio into Primeiro Passo, and keeping in mind that each sheet can be printed in two tones. All elements: big toe guard and flat foot treads, can be individually dyed or selected through scraps of fused leather.
What I learned
The process to design, manufacture, and implement a new wearable into an existing environment is a lot to consider, and what really ties everything together are culture and people. Using the environment as a foundation for materials and understanding their sport and culture influenced me to make my design decisions. Cost is a factor, but it shouldn't limit the potential and benefits of the product delivered. Innovation is viable, feasible, and human.
