Escape Room Research

GOAL : UNDERSTAND WHAT PEOPLE ARE TRYING TO ACHIEVE IN THE ESCAPE ROOM EXPERIENCE

Busarin C., Michelle K., Michelle W.. Xiaoyi X.

Initial Phase

After agreeing on studying escape rooms as our topic, we all went to experience an escape room together as a team and was paired up with three other strangers.

We setup our framing question around understanding what people are trying to achieve with the experience.

Our methodology consisted of the Lego Exercise, Pile Sort, and Image Deck. As a team we carefully crafted these three knowledge goals and prompts that would not influence the participants.

These were the participants in our research. All participants signed a consent form before we conducted the interviews to let them know that they are free to stop the interview at any time and consent to video tape and document the process. The first participant was Angela. To respect her privacy, we left her portrait blank.

What I Learned

Escape rooms are more than a locked room experience. Behind the complexion of the puzzles lies unconscious learning of teamwork, communication, self assessment, and understanding others.

It's very interesting how escape rooms are similar to group projects.
